The angler will never forget this day. This fish is “famous for its sharp teeth”

The angler will never forget this day. This fish is “famous for its sharp teeth”

A reader of the monthly magazine "WW" decided to describe in detail his recent expedition to north-eastern Africa, which he undertook in the first quarter of 2024. The trip to Egypt is a convenient opportunity to catch various specimens that are not available in Poland.

The fishing rod caught fish that were well known to the "locals"

Maciej Garbowicz reported his expedition to the editorial office of "WW". The enthusiast started from the beginning, from the moment he landed at the Marsa Alam airport (south-eastern part of Egypt, on the Red Sea), from which he travelled to Aswan (on the eastern bank of the Nile) by bus. In the last town - together with a companion - "they boarded two vessels, which they used to sail on Lake Nasser" - he describes. One of them was larger, it was on it that they slept and spent most of their time, while the second boat was used for exploration. It was much smaller, faster and they could reach hard-to-reach water areas.

“However, no one hid the fact that the main goal of the expedition was to have a chance to face the fish inhabiting this unique reservoir,” he admitted. He pointed out that “they fished mainly from the shore, exploring numerous bays and islands hidden among desert landscapes.”

During the fascinating expedition, they caught perch and Nile pufferfish (Lates niloticus, Tetraodon lineatus), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and tigerfish (Hydrocynus vittatus) in the lake. The latter are "predatory fish, famous for their agility and sharp teeth," the man recalled.

What else do we know about Hydrocynus? They have silvery, elongated bodies, with thin, dark stripes (located horizontally on their bodies). They can reach a length of up to 105 centimeters. These fish are characterized by a wide snout with 32 sharp, conical teeth - which the enthusiast mentioned for "WW". Thanks to them, they can easily tear apart their prey. Their caudal fin is easy to spot red (and has a black edge).
